Urethral Stricture, the story of a wee operation

I had an operation on Wednesday to determine the cause of some problems I had when I went to the loo. The cystoscopy and optical urethrotemy were performed at Guy’s hospital, at London Bridge. During the procedure the surgeon determined that the problem was a urethral stricture and took measures to deal with it. By Thursday evening I was very happy with the improvement when I went to the loo. After so many months of poor flow I was suddenly peeing like an elephant.

However, this evening I’m feeling less positive.

1) Sometimes when passing water there is still a LOT of blood.
2) Sometimes when passing water it is painful. I was in tears at one point this evening.
3) I will have to learn how to self catheterise intermittently to prevent stricture reformation. I just know that this procedure will not be any fun at all.
4) Patients who suffer urethral injuries often have vascular (blood supply) and nerve damage involving the penis, too, and over half suffer erectile dysfunction because of the injury. This explains a lot, and again I want to cry…

If the bleeding/pain does not go away soon then I will return to the hospital to see what they can do.

The hospital will give me an appointment in two weeks time for a self catherisation lesson.
